Campus Landscapes
The natural lands has over three miles of recreational trails that feature native plant and animal populations found throughout central Florida. Marked trails work as an interpretive guide through the Natural Lands, which doubles as an 18 "hole" disc-golf course. Recreational activities are open to the public dusk til dawn 7 days a week.
Demonstration landscapes have been added to the campus and feature waterwise, Florida friendly, and firewise vegetation. A self-guided tour is being developed by UCF students, and will be available by the end of summer 2009.
Demonstration landscapes have been added to the campus and feature:
-An Arid landscape, showcasing plants from the Americas -- specifically the Western USA -- south through Mexico, and Central and South America.
-A Firewise landscape, demonstrating the appropriate planting technique for rural areas, using only Florida native plants.
-The Africa lancscape is a showcase of the continent, including the island of Madagascar.
-The Mediterranean display shows plants from countries surrounding the Mediterranean sea, including, but not limited to places such as France, Spain, Italy, Turkey and Marocco.
-Asia is represented by popular and common plants such as Camellia, King Sago and Juniper.
-A landscape to the east of Reflection Pond compiled from species around the globe with the purpose of demonstrating combination of color and texture.
- Plantings around the Environmental Initiative & Arboretum office (trailer 525), as well as the Environmental Pavilion within the Natural Lands, are mostly Florida Natives. Species used are mostly drought tolerant and are butterfly attracting species.
These landscapes are funded in part by Landscape & Natural Resources.
